The whole of the territory occupied by the municipal district of Viadana is completely flat and is one of the
largest in Lombardy covering a surface area of 102.5 km².

The Po and Oglio rivers give the area its characteristic appearance together with the various artificial waterways built as part of the reclamation scheme for this territory that has always been subject to frequent flooding.

In ancient times the area probably resembled a large basin where
the water running off the nearby Alps collected.

The area retains much evidence of the presence of the ancient Romans who were the first to start reclaiming the land and building embankments along the river Po, they also created a complex network of roadways linking the various fortified towns.
